The theory mainly deals with the process by which occupational aspirations develop during the preschool through the college years, and the process by which occupational aspirations are sacrificed when they cannot be implemented. After summarizing the theory, I use it to outline a career guidance and counseling system for facilitating growth and reducing risk during the school years. Gottfredson’s theory helps explain the ways in which children and adolescents make career-related decisions. According to the theory the viewpoints and decisions made about careers occur over four developmental stages: orientation to size and power, orientation to sex-roles, orientation to social valuation, and choices explored (Brown, 2012).
